A football punter used to comparing odds across many bookmakers meets a surprise in New Zealand: the market has one lawful entry, so the familiar league table of bookies cannot be drawn.

TAB NZ is the only lawful online provider, and TAB and Betcha are its two brands. Every review or best-bookie list ends there. Offshore operators go unlisted, and none holds a New Zealand licence.

The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) points to the risks of going offshore: weak consumer protection abroad, credits that might not come back and big wins that might go unpaid. No block on those sites exists; liability under New Zealand law sits with the operator.
