A football bet placed from Aotearoa raises a legal question before an odds question: who is permitted to take it. The answer is short, and this section sets it out first.

Section 74AAA of the Racing Industry Act 2020 makes TAB NZ the one provider permitted to take racing and sports bets from people in New Zealand, as of 28 June 2025. TAB and Betcha are two brands of that one operator rather than competitors. No licence can be applied for, and no register of bookmakers exists.

DIA treats a foreign company that offers these bets as a lawbreaker, whereas an individual cannot be convicted for betting offshore. The age for betting with TAB NZ is 18.
